Tumbling Blocks

My daughter and I went to a great workshop Saturday with Irene Silva and our friends in the Evening Star Quilt Guild. We put together this tumbling blocks table topper. We were supposed to have a background and borders but I didn't like the fabric I had chosen for that so we are finishing it with zig-zag borders. The binding is going to be fun.

I made some more progress today on my T-Shirt Quilt. I'm using my boys' Little League shirts.

Photos and appliques fill the cornerstones.

Something Old, Something New

I helped a group of children put this quilt together for a newborn baby. The kids drew and colored the Pooh images with Crayons on muslin. They then hand pieced the blocks together and hand quilted it. I did the binding for them. I'm thinking it was finished about 2002.

I recently machine pieced and machine quilted this one for a customer.

The Indiana State Museum

I had a nice tour of the Indiana State Museum yesterday. This was the first time I have been in the museum since it moved to its new location. And I must say I am very impressed with the museum and its building. I had a tour of the Frugal & Fancy; Indiana Quilts exhibit, a tour of the conservation and storage areas and then "Quilter's High Tea" in the LS Ayers Tearoom.

First we had a tour of the quilt exhibit. Frugal & Fancy compares frugal quilts-- quilts made from scraps for utilitarian use only-- with fancy quilts-- using all new materials and made to show off intricate hand work.

Then we went down to the conservation and storage areas and learned all about the intricate work that goes into caring for all of the old quilts and clothing in the museum's collection.

After the tour we were treated to chicken salad sandwiches, tea and luscious cheese cake in the Tea Room. The cheese cake was to die for!

But the most pleasing part of the tour for me was finding out that the QR Code Quilt that I worked on with Sherry McConnell and is hanging in the Frugal and Fancy exhibit, is now a part of the museum's permanent collection. Wow!

The Egg Money quilt is starting to look like a quilt.

I'm planning to frame each block with reds and blues and then set with ivory sashing. I am so-o-o-o ready to start setting these blocks together... but I suppose I should make one more block for that bottom right hand corner. Sigh.

I've been playing around with a couple of "scrap" blocks from Karen's Alabama Beauty so we can decide what to do with the quilting and thread. On these two samples I used two threads, both from Superior's Rainbows line. In the flowers I used Allspice and in the background I used Seashell.

The Allspice shows up quite a bit on the yellow fabric but disappears into the darker patterned fabrics. The Seashell has bits of pastel pinks and blues in it.

I made some more progress on the Old Maid this weekend. This wouldn't take so long if I didn't have to go back and relearn how to do it every weekend!

I also spent some time working on a Christmas tree skirt. One of my guilds is making skirts to raise money. This design is from Art to Heart, their Peppermint and Holly Berries design booklet.

QR Code Quilt

This week I quilted a QR Code quilt for the Indiana State Museum. They will have a new quilt exhibit opening February 12th, Frugal and Fancy: Indiana Quilts. This quilt will be hanging near the entrance of the exhibit. If you have a Smartphone, and the right software, you would be able to take a picture of the quilt and it would link you to online information about the exhibit.

Sherry McConnell tackled the daunting task of piecing this quilt. The overall size is only 27" x 27". So each of those little squares is 3/4". Good job, Sherry!!

I'm looking forward to seeing the exhibit!!

Quilts needed in Afghanistan

I got word of a request from a colonel in Afghanistan who works with troops who have suffered traumatic brain injuries and stay on his unit from 24 hours to 21 days. He has created a "homey" atmosphere for these wounded personnel and is asking for donations of single size quilts. If anyone is interested in sending home made quilts to this individual, please contact me. debgeyer22@aol.com

On the quilting table this week I had this delightful Ice Cream Quilt.

I used a variegated thread, Rainbows Pinata, and did a meander hiding cherries, spoons and other ice cream goodies in the meandering.

4-Patch

I pieced this 9-patch for a customer from a collection of boxer shorts! There is quite a variety of fabric designs in it but I love how it looks.

She requested that it be hand tied with yarn. The machine stitching that you see there is only basting to hold it in place while it is tied. It will be removed.

Brainstorming

These are some brainstorming ideas for the quilting on Karen Diane's Alabama Beauty. I must say I think she has done a wonderful job on piecing the quilt. The colors are gorgeous!

This first sketch is my favorite so far. The lines enhance the piecing of the quilt and the small bit of feathers adds a little interest.

Similar to the first one but a little different...

This last one I don't really recommend because the fabrics that the feathers would be stitched on are busy fabrics and the feathers really wouldn't show. But we are at the brainstorming stage so no ideas are being thrown out yet... besides I had so much fun drawing it!

The Marie Webster House

A couple of weeks ago I went on a Girl's Day Out to the Marie Webster House in Marion, Indiana, a museum supported by the Quilter's Hall of Fame and dedicated to the celebration of quilting as an art form. The home is where Marie Webster a prominent quilter in the early 1900's lived and has been designated a National Historic Landmark and a Landmark of Women's History; the only official Landmark which honors a quilt maker. The Quilter's Hall of Fame has renovated the house for their headquarters and a museum.

The exhibit on display the day I was there was a collection of quilts made by Nellie Cox Lukenbill. It was a lovely collection; graphic and full of surprises.

After the museum we headed to the Hostess House on West 4th Street in Marion for an elegant lunch.

A good time was had by all... as I'm sure you can imagine.
